Canal and River navigation, some links.
I really like to do cruising on the french canal and river network. There is a big transportation potential. Unfortunately it is not used enough, sometimes practically not at all.
I feel myself as a living part of the industrial archeology of the last 2 centuries.
While I am going through an automatic lock I imagine the boatpeople, the tow - people (is that good English?) and the lockkeeper doing their quite hard jobs.
All of the canals have interesting places, sometimes difficult to locate. These engineers of the past have all my esteem for doing so fine work, finding the ideal trace of the canals with the then known technologies.
